Practice (not theory) makes *high performance*

When was the last time you wanted to get better at something? What did you use or do to improve?

While it might have been a combo of things, I can bet you probably didn't improve without some real-world application, trial & error, feedback, and good ol' hard work to improve.

Book learning and theories only go so far on this one... (check out this week's locker room chat for an overdue sports analogy to make this point😉)

***spoiler alert*** stay to the end of the video for a teaser on something big coming later this week! :)

  • [00:00:00] This week we're going to be talking about how to improve your personal performance by taking something from theory into actual practice. I was having a conversation with someone this week about learning the skill of facilitation

and as we were talking about it, I compared learning facilitation from just a book or a theory to the same thing as reading a book or a theory about how to play soccer. You could read all the books you want, you could read all about the best formations, but if you literally never get out there and touch a ball, you're probably not actually going to be a good soccer player... So how do you take something from theory into practice so that you can improve your own personal performance?

While learning the theories behind something is certainly important and understanding the research into what are proven best practice is, you need to find a safe environment where you can put those theories into practice and collect feedback. If you want to get better at facilitating a group, you need to put yourself in front of some groups and test it out and see how it [00:01:00] goes and then solicit feedback. Make adjustments. Try again, solicit more feedback, repeat.

This is why the leadership development program that I run and I'll actually be launching here pretty soon. Focuses more on how do you actually do the thing, and then gives you space and time to practice doing it and come back, learn, keep building. So stay tuned, later this week, I'll be launching a waitlist for my leadership development program titled Lead to Win

that kicks off this fall. Hope to see you there.
